Scarlet Macaw

The spectacular size and color combination observed in the Scarlet Macaw is one not easily forgotten. This beautiful Macaw loves the company of its family and will bond to several rather than a single person. To the uninformed the Scarlet's physical size (same as the Blue & Gold) can be intimidating but if raised with TLC, handled daily, and given daily exercise out of the cage, a Scarlet will rival the Blue & Gold in gentleness.

A common practice with excellent results is to raise the young with baby Blue & Golds. Once you handle a Scarlet and watch him interact with you, it's hard to walk away. Click here for a photo of our breeder Scarlet Macaws.

As with all Macaws, the Scarlet is very intelligent and mischievous. They are quite skilled in mastering the cage door lock and proud of themselves when they do so. It goes without saying only the largest of cages should be used to house a Macaw, otherwise there will be significant wing and tail feather damage in the confinement of a small cage, and may also alter their behavior. $1,200 weaned.

Blue & Gold Macaw

When we say the word Macaw, the Blue & Gold is the best known of the Macaws and the one which first comes to mind. The front of the Macaw is gold while the rear and the complete wing is blue. The forehead is green and unlike the Scarlet's horn colored beak, the Blue & Gold's is black. Their length is between 32-36".

Well known to be a big clown, with a gentle disposition, the Blue and Gold is recommended as the first time choice for a Macaw. This Macaw is quite adept at performing tricks and one of their first is usually unlocking their cage door. Another characteristic of this species is a love for extended physical contact. They love to cuddle, play, and tease and explore their environment. They need lots of room to play and get proper exercise.

Like the Scarlet, the cage should be in the Macaw class to prevent wing and tail feather damage. Provide plenty of wood to keep the beak in top form. Click here for a picture of a pair of our Blue & Golds.$1,000 weaned.

Military Macaw

With an overall length of 28" the Military Macaw is the smallest of the large macaws. There are 3 subspecies of the Military Macaws but the average person would find it difficult to distinguish between the three. The most commonly seen Military Macaw in the USA were originally imported from Venezuela, Columbia, and Peru. Click for a photo of our Military Macaws.

Like the other popular macaws they need a large cage and if possible they should spend the majority of their time during the day on a play gym or other out-of-cage environment. The Military Macaw loves showers but will readily accept the mist bottles as a substitute.

The Military Macaw doesn't require a specialized diet but don't forget their protein requirements. Beans and brown rice are excellent choices to fulfill their needs. Lots of fruit and veggies will keep the Military in top condition. They love apples and pears.

The Military Macaw is becoming quite popular as more people learn just how intelligent and beautiful they are. Once overlooked in favor of their larger cousins people are learning they are far more than their once described "green Macaw". $800 weaned.
